Whilst the national team may not be firing on all cylinders, life is certainly on the up for Welsh club side Ogmore Vale RFC.
Celebrating promotion to League 4 East Central, their first for 30 years, the festivities are set to span five years towards their 150th anniversary year in 2030.
With a long haul tour to North America on the horizon, waiting five years proved too long for the Bridgend district squad who’ve booked a tour to Tbilisi, Georgia in May 2027. Playing against local opposition, Ogmore Vale become one of the few sides in the UK to have taken on this eastern European challenge to one of the continent’s most progressive rugby destinations.
Including historical tours to ancient sites on the Old Silk Road, match recovery tales place in the city’s sulphur baths where locals dwell each morning to cleanse and prepare their day. Aching joints will also be nursed in the Kakheti region (the country’s premier wine region), renowned for its 8,000-year-old winemaking history, for a day of tastings and lunch amongst these historical vineyards.
Off the pitch, the club has been busy improving its playing and recreational facilities. “We are in the process of reinstalling temporary changing rooms at Ogmore Park. We’ve managed to raise £6,000 through a Go Fund Me page. With work well underway, we are hoping to be back playing down the Park in the first game of the new year”, commented John Lloyd, club Captain and tour leader.
