Cricket tours to Gibraltar

Take your team on a cricket tour to Gibraltar, a popular and vibrant tourist destination at the entrance to the Mediterranean with a rich and fascinating history that has left its mark on the character and resilience of its people.

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and The Rock itself is a dramatic limestone outcrop jutting out of the sea. On its summit are viewing platforms providing breathtaking views of the North African coast and Spain.

With excellent connections by land, air and sea, it is served by an international airport with regular scheduled flights to and from London and the main cities in Britain. The weather’s always warm and the Rock is bathed in sunshine virtually the whole year round.

The game of cricket has been played on the Rock of Gibraltar since the late 18th century. Initially played by British Servicemen, it was not long before some of the local inhabitants took up the game. It is recorded that by the year 1800, there was a cricket ground on the land immediately to the north of the Rock, and that by 1822, there were civilians playing the game as well as Servicemen. The Gibraltar Cricket Club was established in 1883, and it was to form the backbone of civilian cricket on the Rock well into the 20th century.

By the 1930s, Gibraltar was producing many local-born cricketers and the game flourished. After the war, the Gibraltar Cricket Club was given a site adjacent to the airfield, the location of the present-day Victoria Stadium. Nowadays, touring teams play on a matted wicket with 4G outfield at the impressive Europa Point complex on Gibraltar’s southern tip.

When to visit Gibraltar? Cricket season is April to July.
