Blackwood Youth RFC’s Rugby Tour to Malta
Blackwood Youth RFC set off on a five-day rugby adventure to Malta, eager to combine competitive fixtures with the chance to explore one of Europe’s most picturesque island destinations. For many of the players, it was their first taste of an overseas tour, and the excitement was clear as they prepared for a memorable week of rugby.
Their first full day on the island was dedicated to experiencing Malta at its finest. The group spent the morning exploring the island’s beaches and streets, absorbing the scenery that makes Malta such a distinctive destination. A swim in the Mediterranean provided the perfect refreshing break, before the day rounded off with a chance to sample local Maltese cuisine.
With spirits high, match day arrived as Blackwood Youth RFC took to the field against a local Maltese side, Cavalieri RFC. The players were eager to test themselves abroad, and the fixture provided both challenge and enjoyment. After the final whistle, the hosts delivered the kind of post-match hospitality that Malta is renowned for: warm, generous and centred around a shared love of the sport.
The following day offered a change of pace, allowing the group to unwind and enjoy Malta from a different angle. They spent the afternoon in Bugibba Square, a lively hub filled with cafés, bars and restaurants where players could relax and enjoy the sunshine. From there, they wandered along St Paul’s Promenade, a coastal walkway perfect for taking in views across the bay.
For Blackwood Youth RFC, Malta proved to be an exceptional touring destination, warm, welcoming and full of opportunities for both sporting and personal development. The trip offered the ideal balance between structured team activity and relaxed exploration, allowing the group to grow closer off the pitch while developing confidence on it.
