St David’s College Rugby Tour to Europe
St David’s College in Llandudno embarked on a memorable rugby tour across Slovenia and northern Italy, combining competitive fixtures with cultural discovery in two of Europe’s most fascinating regions. Flying into Venice and transferring straight to Ljubljana, the group wasted no time immersing themselves in new surroundings.
Their first full day in Slovenia saw St David’s face local side RK Ljubljana, giving the players a chance to test themselves against new opposition on unfamiliar turf. After the final whistle, the squad had a unique opportunity to watch a senior men’s derby between Ljubljana and Split, offering a front-row view of high-level club rugby in the region. Seeing the intensity and passion of the players was both inspiring and eye-opening for the students, and a real highlight of their sporting experience abroad.
The pace shifted the following day with a visit to one of Slovenia’s most iconic landmarks, Lake Bled. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery, the group enjoyed training runs around the lake, using the landscape as a backdrop for conditioning work and team drills.
Day four saw the squad begin their journey toward Italy, stopping at Postojna Caves in southwest Slovenia along the way for some geographical enrichment. The visit allowed the players to explore one of Europe’s most extraordinary underground cave systems. They finished their day by travelling on toward the Venezia region.
The next day began with free time in Treviso, giving the squad space to relax and explore. That afternoon, they travelled to Udine for their second fixture against a local team, bringing the focus back to the pitch. The post-match hospitality once again highlighted the warmth and generosity of their hosts.
After a final evening together in northern Italy, St David’s flew home on day six with memories that will stay with them throughout their rugby journeys. The tour offered everything a school rugby experience should: competitive matches against two different countries, opportunities to learn from senior players and iconic landscapes.
