Tarvisio: Italy’s hidden gem

When we talk to our knowledgeable ski friends about our overseas work trips (or holidays as they tirelessly insist on labelling them) the reaction when we mention Tarvisio is always the same: ‘‘Where’’?

We get it because it’s not on the list of Italy’s 10 best resorts or probably the 100 most recognised resorts in Europe.  Why? Because it’s not the biggest, scariest, highest and certainly not the wildest!  All of which are criteria to make the ‘best of’ lists for groups of friends and maybe the rich and famous but not necessarily criteria for the best resort for a school ski trip.

Why do WE love it so much?  In no particular order:

Great hotels.  A tremendous variety of 3 and 4* hotels ranging from piste-side to out-of-town, all owned by families eager to make each guest very welcome.  This is hugely important as for some of the children travelling this could be their first and last experience of staying in a hotel. Food is of a uniformly high standard; this is Italy after all!

Great Instruction.  We partner with both ski schools in Tarvisio and both Ski Directors, Daniele and Donato, run very professional outfits.  Beginners are extremely well catered for as are intermediates and advanced.  There are not a million miles of piste to ski but everyone has a great time and progresses at a rate of knots.

Great runs.  Quality, not quantity.  You may not have chance to cover the hundreds of KM’s of skiing boasted by many resorts but you’ll be sure of variety here in Tarvisio maintained to a very high standard.  From a student’s perspective being with friends in any length of snow terrain is fun, fun, fun!

Great sights.  As one of the most photographed places in the Alps, stunning doesn’t even begin to get close to describing Monte Lussari.  Sitting at the top of the resort, intermediates and advanced can ski from here whilst beginners can visit on the Gondola.  Certainly everyone will enjoy a hot chocolate at one of the numerous quaint bars either during the day or in the evening.

Great Après.  A marvellous selection!
Sledging immediately outside our biggest hotel in Tarvisio.
Ice skating only 20 minutes away.
Disco in an authentic bar/disco in the town (shut to the public).
Pizza night venues are numerous!
Finally, a visit to the thermal pools across the border in Austria.  The children love being able to swim outside surrounded by snow!

Overall, Tarvisio really is a fabulous destination and will provide a fabulous ski experience for school groups.  Click here to read more about the resort or enquire with us for prices via coach and air.
