Coleg Gwent’s biennial touring tradition continued in July with a 4-game, 19-day rugby tour to Australia.
Rugby Tour to Australia
Commencing on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, the tourists warmed up with bespoke on-site training sessions, a beach BBQ and a visit to Australia Zoo after their tour opening victory against St Andrew’s Anglican College.
Luck was on the tourists’ side as dates for rugby league’s State of Origin series coincided with their stay in Brisbane. Watching Queensland v New South Wales battle it out gave the players an opportunity to watch live sport in a second rugby code, a feat repeated in Sydney with a Waratahs Super Rugby fixture.
A short R&R stop in Surfers Paradise was followed by an energetic leg in Sydney, billeting and playing against Waverley College. A tight encounter saw the Welsh U18 tourists progress with two wins from two games, although tough encounters in Canberra and Melbourne levelled the aggregate.
Travelling between Sydney and Melbourne via coach presented the players with an opportunity to take in the International Cricket Hall of Fame at the Don Bradman Oval in Bowral. The players saw the very best of Canberra and Melbourne, including a tour of the famous MCG prior to heading back to British shores.
